2001: A Space Odyssey
A masterpiece of the science-fiction genre. Kubrick redefined the boundaries of cinema, expanding them into pure contemplation of humanity’s nature, while setting new horizons for science-fiction films. The film’s timeline stretches from the dawn of humankind to its titular year. On Earth, during the Stone Age, in the presence of a mysterious monolith, early humans use tools as weapons for the first time, marking a crucial step toward intelligence. In 1999, astronauts discover a similar black obelisk on the Moon. In 2001, aboard a spaceship traveling between Jupiter and Earth, the onboard computer makes a fatal error, killing most of the crew and, in an attempt to conceal its mistake, causes further deaths. Beyond time: the sole survivor of the journey to Jupiter transcends into the next stage of human evolution.
