Meeting Mai + Lines from the Heart
Lines from the Heart
After the screenings there will be a meeting with the participation of Louis Lemkow Zetterling, son of the director and actress Maja Zetterling, sociologist and academic professor.
Almost 30 years after the premiere of The Girls (1968), the beloved actresses and iconic stars of Swedish cinema – Bibi Andersson, Harriet Andersson, and Gunnel Lindblom – gather at Mai Zetterling’s house in France. The director herself is no longer there (she passed away a year earlier), but this reunion fulfills one of her cinematic dreams. Zetterling had planned such a project – a shared dinner at her Le Maze estate and a filmed conversation.
This highly intimate and surprisingly candid documentary by Christina Olofson is not just a recollection of their collaboration on The Girls, but also a reflection on the actresses’ life and career choices. It’s a story about their professional paths, aging, fame, motherhood, and money. The film offers both humorous and bitter reflections – such as when Harriet Andersson admits that as a young actress, she “had no face” because everyone was only interested in her breasts and buttocks. Meanwhile, Bibi Andersson recalls Bergman and Nykvist mercilessly critiquing her makeup, and Gunnel Lindblom speaks openly about the personal cost of having children.

Meeting Mai
A short documentary made in 1984 in the French village of Banne, where Mai Zetterling had bought a ruined medieval house in the late 1970s. Meeting Mai records a candid conversation in which the director revisits the controversies following the premiere of The Girls, her most notorious film. She also talks about her reasons for abandoning acting and about her personal “five-year plan” that helped her gain her directing skills. Honest and direct – just like in her films – Mai Zetterling reflects on the atmosphere she faced in a profession dominated by men. “They said I directed like a man. Suddenly, from a sex bomb, I became someone completely different. I wondered if I had really changed so much – maybe I gained weight, maybe I looked different? No, they just started seeing me in a different light.”
Jannike Åhlund and Solveig Nordlund are Swedish filmmakers who collaborated on the documentary Meeting Mai (1996), dedicated to Mai Zetterling.
Jannike Åhlund is a Swedish journalist, film critic, and editor. She served as the editor-in-chief of the film magazine Chaplin in Stockholm and was the artistic director of the Göteborg Film Festival from 2002 to 2007. She is currently the program director at the Bergmancenter.
Solveig Nordlund was born in 1943 in Stockholm. She is a director, screenwriter, editor, writer, and translator. In 1980, she returned to Sweden, where she continued her filmmaking career, creating documentaries and literary adaptations.
