Orlando
An avant-garde, visually captivating screen adaption of Virginia Woolf’s novel. Orlando, an aristocrat from the court of Elizabeth I blessed with the gift of eternal youth, traverses four centuries of British history, changing, along the way, not only his clothes but also his sex. The camera follows him through a parade of colorful characters in a manner that betrays the director’s training in choreography, allowing audiences to immerse themselves for a moment in the reality of each of these worlds, in which a perpetual ballet of conventions and social games is being played out, whether in baroque wigs or business suits. Tilda Swinton plays the titular role a bit casually, ironically, lending a degree of lightness to this existential story. Potter skillfully combines satire with a philosophical parable, using the conventions of surrealism to ask bitter questions. This multi-award-winning film has entered the canon of British cinema, and its original form has provided inspiration for other filmmakers, including Wes Anderson and Sofia Coppola.
