Possession
West Berlin during the Cold War. Mark and Anna (Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill) are caught in a marital crisis, strained by Mark’s long absence and Anna’s affair. As she becomes increasingly detached from their child, her emotional state spirals into chaos, making any reconciliation impossible. Determined to understand his wife’s erratic behavior and salvage their marriage, Mark begins to investigate. But things take an even more unsettling turn when he meets Helen – a woman who is the spitting image of Anna.
Possession has two sources – Andrzej Żuławski recalled in an interview for „Film” magazine. – The first is deeply personal. Almost everything on screen actually happened to me. The only fictional elements are the protagonist’s profession as a spy and the film’s supernatural aspects. But the shock of a man returning home to find his world shattered – that was my reality. Even some of the dialogue comes straight from memory. The second inspiration was Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage – a wise, piercingly insightful film – the director explained.
