Ride The High Country
At a time when the western had become a rare and increasingly flashy cinematic spectacle, along came Sam Peckinpah – until then, just a director of low-budget TV series whose debut film had been largely underwhelming. Everything changed with Ride the High Country, widely considered the first anti-western and a harbinger of the wave of revisionist masterpieces to come. The story follows two aging gunfighters (played masterfully by Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea) hired to escort a shipment of gold. What sets the film apart is its deep affection for its protagonists, sharp dialogue, and a willingness to tackle themes the western had largely ignored until then. This marks the first appearance of Peckinpah’s signature vision – a hymn to primal freedom that, throughout his career, would always be crushed by human weakness and pitted against sheer barbarism. While Ride the High Country is a poignant and melancholic tale of friendship and loyalty, it also carries the seeds of nihilism and pessimism that would define one of the most original voices in American cinema.
