The Holy Mountain
An explosive fusion of mysticism and alchemy, The Holy Mountain is a film where Alejandro Jodorowsky took on numerous roles – serving as director, screenwriter, actor, composer, and costume designer. Produced by Allen Klein’s ABKCO, the film draws inspiration from the teachings of Armenian philosopher George Gurdjieff and the mystical visions found in The Ascent of Mount Carmel by Saint John of the Cross. The plot follows The Thief, who embarks on a surreal journey through a labyrinth of alchemical symbols, Tarot imagery, and blasphemous scenes, confronting trials that ultimately lead to spiritual enlightenment. Visually intense, brimming with brutal imagery and shrouded in mystery, the film remains a timeless manifesto of psychomagic and a stunning meta-commentary on the act of creation itself. The Holy Mountain’s cultural impact was so profound that Marilyn Manson, enchanted by the character of the Alchemist, asked Jodorowsky to officiate his wedding wearing a costume from the film’s set.

Alejandro Jodorowsky (b. 1929) is a true visionary artist – a director, actor, composer, comic book writer, performer, occultist, and psychotherapist whose work balances on the edge of dream, ritual, and madness. As a co-founder of the experimental Panic Theatre, he drew inspiration from mysticism, surrealism, and theatrical ecstasy. His films are psychedelic journeys filled with symbols and metaphysics, with Jodorowsky treating art as a tool for healing the soul. By exploring the human subconscious and defying social norms, he became an icon of counterculture and one of the most uncompromising artists of the 20th century.
