Late Spring
The screening on April 25 will be preceded by an introduction by Łukasz Mańkowski.
For many scholars of Japanese cinema, Late Spring remains the defining achievement of Yasujirō Ozu, one of the great masters of contemplative filmmaking. The first instalment in the so-called Noriko Trilogy, featuring an unforgettable performance by Setsuko Hara, the film may initially appear to be a quiet melodrama about intergenerational tension. A widowed father wants nothing more than for his grown daughter to marry, yet through small gestures and seemingly ordinary conversations, their differing expectations of life gradually come into view. Beneath this intimate story runs the pulse of post-war Japan – a country forced to rethink family relationships in the shadow of loss and rapid modernisation.
Over time, the film has come to be regarded as one of the most iconic and, at the same time, most elusive works in Ozu’s filmography. It is here that we find the famous cut to a close-up of a vase standing in the empty space of a traditional Japanese room – a shot that follows a pivotal exchange between father and daughter. Simple yet enigmatic, this image has inspired decades of interpretation from critics and scholars alike, pointing to the almost spiritual quality of Ozu’s cinema. His sensitivity to the rhythms of everyday life, to silence, and to the stillness of the frame reaches one of its fullest expressions here, making Late Spring a crystallisation of his mature style.
