Saturday at Timeless Film Festival Warsaw

Saturday at the festival is a day of major rediscoveries and intimate portraits. Today, we go behind the scenes of Czech cinema in the company of the Svěrák family, surrender to the concert energy of The Cure, and revisit a milestone of Finnish cinema. The first screenings begin as early as 10:00 am.

Event of the day: Daddy – Jan Svěrák on his father

Today’s screening of Daddy (5:30 pm, Muranów cinema) is more than just a documentary screening – it is an invitation into the intimate world of the most celebrated duo in Czech cinema. Jan Svěrák (director of the Oscar-winning Kolya) has created a portrait of his father, Zdeněk, that is both tender and full of humour.

After the screening, join us for a conversation with Jan Svěrák, moderated by Petr Vlček.

The magic of 35mm: The Custodian

As part of the Classic Latin American Cinema section, we invite you to a screening of the Argentine film The Custodian (3:00 pm, Iluzjon cinema) from an original 35mm print. The screening will be preceded by an introduction from the section’s curator, Piotr Kobus.

Rubén is the minister’s shadow – an invisible bodyguard required to be discreet, loyal and, above all, absent. Rodrigo Moreno constructs a minimalist and finely calibrated portrait of a man whose life is a carefully designed void, until something dangerous begins to stir beneath the mask of professionalism.

A cinematic kaleidoscope: Saturday recommendations

Today’s selection offers a cross-section of key currents in world cinema – from the unrest of American suburbia to the European New Wave:

Killer of Sheep, 2:45 pm, Luna cinema – Charles Burnett’s restored masterpiece, a lyrical, neorealist portrait of the African American community in Watts, capturing the daily struggle for dignity and survival.

Eight Deadly Shots, 5:00 pm, Luna cinema – Mikko Niskanen’s monumental, five-hour magnum opus is a stark and merciless portrait of a farmer whose struggle with poverty and descent into alcoholism lead to inevitable tragedy.

322, 5:30 pm, Luna cinema – Dušan Hanák’s debut feature, a poignant psychological study of a cook who, confronted with a mistaken medical diagnosis, is forced into a painful reckoning with his life and surroundings.

Green Card, 8:00 pm, Iluzjon cinema – Peter Weir’s warm and elegant romantic comedy, about an environmentalist and an undocumented immigrant who enter into a marriage of convenience for their own benefit.

Dingo, 4:30 pm, Muranów cinema – a hypnotic story about the power of art, following an Australian boy whose life is changed by a chance encounter with a legendary trumpeter, played by Miles Davis himself.

The Cure: Anniversary Live in Hyde Park, 7:15 pm, Muranów cinema – a grand celebration of music, with Robert Smith and the band in superb form as they mark the group’s 40th anniversary before a vast crowd.
