FINA Presents: Faces of Interwar Poland
The interwar period marked a time of remarkable cultural flourishing in Poland, vividly reflected in its cinema. Although pre-war Polish filmmaking is sometimes seen as homogeneous and formulaic, its true landscape was far more diverse and nuanced. The films featured in this section – Is Lucyna a Girl?, The Ghosts, and Halka – showcase the varied dimensions of Polish cinema of the time: from a light-hearted comedy of mistaken identity, through a socially conscious drama, to an ambitious silent film experimenting with new formal and technical approaches. Today, audiences have a rare opportunity to rediscover these nearly century-old works in digitally restored versions prepared by the National Film Archive – Audiovisual Institute (FINA).
