Tribute to Brigitte Bardot in the program of the 3rd edition of Timeless Film Festival Warsaw
Brigitte Bardot is one of the great icons of world cinema. She initially dreamed of a career in ballet, but it was film that made full use of her sensual beauty and singular screen presence.
The turning point in her career came with Roger Vadim’s And God Created Woman (1956), a film that created the Brigitte Bardot legend and made her an international star. Over the course of the late 1950s and early 1960s, the French actress became both a symbol of sex appeal and a figure of social change – one of the defining stars of her era. Her performances permanently transformed the image of femininity on screen.
In the 1960s, she delivered several roles that entered film history. Among her most important films are Henri-Georges Clouzot’s La Vérité (“Brigitte Bardot as you have never seen her before!”), Jean-Luc Godard’s Contempt – often cited as her most mature performance – and Louis Malle’s Viva Maria!, in her famous pairing with Jeanne Moreau. One of Bardot’s later screen appearances came in The Legend of Frenchie King (dir. Christian-Jaque, 1971), a playful western parody in which she starred alongside Claudia Cardinale.
In 1973, at the age of 39, she left cinema behind, leaving a legend that endures to this day.
