Fiddler on the Roof
The swan song of the classic musical as it enters a new era, permitting nostalgia and swapping the studio for the street, Fiddler on the Roof is the most beautiful love letter to the genre. It features magnificent music (for example, the rhythmic Tradition and the poignant Sunrise, Sunset), a touching narrative, and a deep appreciation for the poetic qualities of the musical. Beloved by Polish audiences, Norman Jewison’s film is the story of Tevye the Dairyman (Chaim Topol in a celebrated, astoundingly convincing performance) and his family living in an Eastern European shtetl at the turn of the 20th century. Shot in Yugoslavia, the landscapes evoke and celebrate a world that no longer exists – Jewish villages, centuries-old synagogues, and close-knit communities. From girly garments to Jewish rituals and ceremonies, Fiddler on the Roof is a meticulously executed, timeless tale about the fact that nothing can last forever.
Patrycja Mucha
Norman Jewison (1926–2024) was a Canadian director who made films in a wide variety of genres during a career that spanned half a century. These included comedies, musicals, crime films and even science fiction. His best-remembered films are probably the three for which he received Oscar nominations: In the Heat of the Night (1967), Fiddler on the Roof (1971) and Moonstruck (1987).

TRIGGER WARNING
An absolutely smashing movie; it is not especially sensitive, it is far from delicate, and it isn’t even particularly imaginative, but it seems to me the most powerful movie musical ever made.
