I Know Where I’m Going!

The colour whisperers knew how to charm in black and white: I Know Where I’m Going! is, for many cinema buffs, Powell and Pressburger’s best film. Filmed in a style that’s reminiscent of Citizen Kane, it begins with a biographical run through the life of the main character, Joan (a vibrantly energetic Wendy Hiller), only to ask – does she definitely know where she’s going? When Joan meets Torquil (the seductive, raspy Roger Livesey), it becomes clear that her matrimonial plans involving a certain wealthy industrialist will be put to the test. The Archers’ most unassuming masterpiece invites the viewers into a welcoming Scottish setting that seduces with its lack of pretence and compelling characters. I Know Where I’m Going! is the perfect romance – full of soul-baring and rough waters, spelled out in almost fairy tale-like landscapes. It is also Tilda Swinton’s favourite film, and we all know she has great taste.

???

I’ve never seen a picture that smelled of wind and rain in quite this way, nor one that so beautifully exploited the kind of scenery people actually live with, rather than the kind that is commercialized as a showplace.
