Mean Girls
A cult millennial classic that definitely resonates with every 30-something’s nightmares of returning to high school. Written by comedy powerhouse Tina Fey, Mean Girls is a ruthless portrayal of a school jungle dominated by the leader of the Plastics, Regina George (a wonderfully snarky Rachel McAdams). Following a childhood spent in Africa and raised away from the trashy US culture, Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan at the height of her popularity) is not familiar with Jingle Bell Rock and charmingly oblivious to the school hierarchy. Together with a couple of other outsiders, Cady comes up with a plan to infiltrate the Plastics, overthrow Regina’s rule, and get the boy of her dreams. Turning twenty-years old this year, Mark Waters’ film is simultaneously absurd and realistic in its depiction of cliques and the universal, desperate need to belong, regardless of one’s age. In a sense, high school never ends and there is always some sort of sinister Regina George looming on the horizon. Psst! Remember to wear pink to the screening.
