David Lynch: Collection of Short Films – Part 2
A section for those who want to see David Lynch in two extreme forms: as an anarchist and as a visionary. Dumbland is a brutal, cartoonish grotesque – raw, loud, and completely unrestrained. The drawings look like scribbles in the margins of a madman’s notebook, while the humor teeters on the edge of absurd violence and childish stupidity. Alongside this animated micro-disaster, we present The First Image: David Lynch – a minimalist yet hypnotic interview, where the director sketches out his earliest cinematic visions, revealing the sources of his inspiration and unparalleled imagination. Two faces of the same artist: one screams, the other whispers, but both are equally unsettling.

David Lynch (1946 – 2025) – an American director, screenwriter, producer and visual artist, born in Missoula, Montana. He studied painting in Philadelphia, before moving to Los Angeles to make films. He began production on his feature-length debut, Eraserhead, while still a student at the American Film Institute’s Centre for Advanced Film and Television Studies, which initially provided funding for the project. Lynch was one of the most original and influential cinema visionaries. His signature mix of surrealism, genre tropes and experimental narration found favour with a wide audience. Lynch’s films relied heavily on striking visual and soundtrack elements, which always function as integral parts of the complex structure of his works. In addition to directing, he has practised painting, photography, meditation and experimented with new media. A three-time Oscar nominee, Lynch was awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for Wild at Heart (1990).

Dumbland
A crude, exaggerated, and shockingly violent animated series, in which Lynch brutally satirizes the mindless aggression and absurdity of American life. The grotesque, loud-mouthed protagonist rampages through a world built on violence, vulgarity, and irrational fears. More than just a provocation, Dumbland serves as a bleak and biting critique of contemporary culture.

The First Image: David Lynch
The First Image: David Lynch is an essential, intimate portrait of a filmmaker who reshaped independent cinema. In this short yet profound conversation, Lynch revisits his origins – the creative process behind Eraserhead, a film that, like a manifesto of surrealist sensitivity, defined his unique artistic language. Gibert’s documentary is not a conventional interview but rather a cinematic sketch, in which the master of dreamlike narratives reconstructs his first cinematic visions. It is a record of artistic restlessness, persistence, and obsession – forces that led to the birth of a cult masterpiece.
