Delicatessen
Although Jean-Pierre Jeunet is best known for the syrupy sweetness of Amelie, his debut Delicatessen tastes more of… sewers and human flesh. This surreal black comedy transports us to a post-apocalyptic world, where together with the main character, clown Louison (Dominique Pinon), we go to work in a mysterious tenement building. The residents are all eccentrics and – as we quickly learn – they tend to die a little too often and under suspicious circumstances. Gradually revealing more secrets of an increasingly grotesque reality, Jeunet skilfully juggles jokes, conventions, and ideas. The young director serves the viewers a bizarre love story, elements of science fiction and a detective story and, above all, a showcase of his truly original imagination. Slightly Burtonian and a little putrid, Delicatessen is a must-see proposition for those with eccentric tastes and strong stomachs.

Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet are a French directorial duo known for their unique vision, blending surrealism with meticulous attention to detail. Their breakthrough came with Delicatessen (1991), a dark comedy set in a post-apocalyptic world. They gained further acclaim with City of Lost Children (1995), a visually stunning, baroque fantasy. After this film, they went separate ways – Jeunet found success with the beloved Amélie (2001), while Caro focused on animation and special effects.
