Jovita
After the screening on April 8, a meeting with Daniel Olbrychski will be held at the Muranów cinema.
A poetic meditation on lost illusions, a bitter reflection on the clash between dreams and reality, and one of the most intricate explorations of the psychology of love in Polish cinema. What does Jowita (Barbara Kwiatkowska), the enigmatic woman at a masquerade ball, hide under her veiled face? That question will haunt Marek (Daniel Olbrychski) throughout his life. As he follows the trail of memories and suspicions, viewers are drawn into the shifting landscapes of love—infatuation and idealization, emotional distance and selfishness, intoxication and disappointment. Decades later, Jowita remains as alluring and enigmatic as ever, an electrifying film that lingers in the mind. Much of its power comes from Tadeusz Konwicki’s screenplay, which enriches and deepens the themes of Stanisław Dygat’s novel Disneyland. Janusz Morgenstern’s meandering, flashback-based narrative won him a directing award at the San Sebastian Film Festival. The film also holds a special place in history as the setting for Zbigniew Cybulski’s final great performance, adding an extra layer of poignancy to its haunting beauty.
