Wild at Heart

Shakespearean in spirit, ostentatious, sensual, cruel, and darkly humorous – Wild at Heart (winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1990) is undeniably one of David Lynch’s finest works. Inspired by Barry Gifford’s novel and featuring a soundtrack composed by Angelo Badalamenti, this is a film not to be missed.

Cape Fear, North Carolina. After serving time in a correctional facility for manslaughter, Sailor Ripley reunites with the love of his life, Lula. But her mother, Marietta, is vehemently opposed to their relationship. Determined to keep them apart, she enlists the help of her longtime lover and private detective, Farragut, to track down the couple as they head south to New Orleans.

“From the very beginning, Lynch envisioned Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern as Sailor and Lula. He was convinced Cage was the perfect choice after watching his performances throughout the 1980s, particularly in Norman Jewison’s Moonstruck. In one scene, Cage’s character delivers a fiery monologue about the nature of love – that was the moment Lynch knew he had found his Sailor”.

David Lynch (1946 – 2025) – an American director, screenwriter, producer and visual artist, born in Missoula, Montana. He studied painting in Philadelphia, before moving to Los Angeles to make films. He began production on his feature-length debut, Eraserhead, while still a student at the American Film Institute’s Centre for Advanced Film and Television Studies, which initially provided funding for the project. Lynch was one of the most original and influential cinema visionaries. His signature mix of surrealism, genre tropes and experimental narration found favour with a wide audience. Lynch’s films relied heavily on striking visual and soundtrack elements, which always function as integral parts of the complex structure of his works. In addition to directing, he has practised painting, photography, meditation and experimented with new media. A three-time Oscar nominee, Lynch was awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for Wild at Heart (1990).
