A recording of the concert given on 18 July 1987 at the Gasteig Philharmonie in Munich, shortly after Miles Davis received a Grammy Award for “Tutu”. The programme includes material from “You’re Under Arrest” and “Tutu”. A Miles Davis performance was never just a concert. Each one felt like a rite, with the great trumpeter as its presiding priest. Davis combines dense, high-intensity electric jazz – “Tutu”, “Portia”, “New Blues” – with lightly delivered pop songs such as Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” and Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature”. He was always keen to work with young, promising musicians who often went on to become jazz stars under his wing. That was true here of performers such as Mino Cinelu, Kenny Garrett and Darryl Jones.
The line-up featured: Miles Davis – trumpet, Mino Cinelu – percussion, Kenny Garrett – alto saxophone and flute, Adam Holzman and Robert Irving III – keyboards, Darryl Jones – bass guitar, Joseph “Foley” McCreary – solo bass guitar, and Ricky Wellman – drums.
