The Circus Tent
The screening on April 25 will be preceded by an introduction by Mehelli Modi, curator of the section Second Run Presents.
Govindan Aravindan’s The Circus Tent explores the ripples created by the arrival of a travelling circus in a remote Indian village. From their processional entrance through spellbinding performances to their final pack-down, circus life is captured in striking imagery. Cutting between skilled performers and wide-eyed spectators, the film encapsulates the sheer magic of art encountered for the first time.
Aravindan’s lyrical masterpiece links the transience of the travelling troupe with the inevitable mortality of life. Once thought lost, now beautifully restored, the film will enrapture audiences anew.
Mehelli Modi

Govindan Aravindan (1935–1991) – Indian director, screenwriter, and cartoonist, one of the pioneers of the golden era of Malayalam cinema in the 1970s and 1980s. He made his debut with Uttarayanam (1975), and his subsequent films received numerous awards in India. Aravindan experimented with form, moving away from classical narrative toward a poetic and contemplative style. Often described as a filmmaker of philosophical sensibility, he created works imbued with an aura of mysticism and transcendence.
