Groundhog Day
The most widely recognized time loop in cinematic history, Andie MacDowell’s most charming role, and one of Bill Murray’s most iconic creations. One can repeat, repeat, and repeat everything that has already been said about Groundhog Day, and yet this comedy still defends itself with the same vibrant, unpretentious charm. This, however, cannot be said of the life of discontented Phil (Murray). For this blasé weather presenter, time stands still, forcing him to relive the same, detested day over and over again. Phil attempts to find a way out of this nightmare, and with it – the meaning of life and everything around him. The question is: Don’t we all live in a Groundhog Day, doing the same thing over and over again, year after year? Isn’t the realization of this fact the key to finding a way out of the trap? If we are perpetually turning our thoughts to the future or dwelling on the past, do we stop celebrating the present and fail to fully experience our “here and now”?
