Requiem for a Dream
The screening on April 24 will be preceded by an introduction by Mateusz Demski.
Appearing on a TV show, a pretty girlfriend, a small clothing business, quick money and getting high – Requiem for a Dream lays out a panorama of suburban aspirations. A son and his mother both fall into addiction – he to drugs, she to diet pills – and gradually lose control over their lives.
Darren Aronofsky’s second feature earned him the admiration of cinema lovers. It is a work of total stylization — from distorted imagery (unusual lenses and filters), through the performances (Ellen Burstyn received an Oscar nomination), to sound and music (hallucinations and hypnotic loops). Requiem for a Dream is undoubtedly one of the major editing achievements of the 2000s, and on several levels. Most striking is the rhythm: dynamic, music‑video‑inspired, full of accelerations, slowdowns and rapid montages. Aronofsky’s hallmarks also include repeated visual sequences and the use of split‑screen. The form is shaped by an increasingly dense weave of parallel storylines, culminating in an impressive final crescendo. All of this aligns with the film’s core idea — portraying addiction as a mutating yet repetitive condition with an ever‑intensifying momentum.
