Amores Perros
The screening of Amores Perros at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival caused a sensation and marked the beginning of a new golden age for Mexican cinema. Alejandro González Iñárritu, followed by Alfonso Cuarón, Guillermo del Toro, and others, launched their conquest of Hollywood and international cinema.
The film presents a tragic car accident from three distinct perspectives, colliding the lives of three characters among the 20 million inhabitants of Mexico City. Although they live side by side, they belong to entirely different worlds. Without the crash, their paths would likely never have crossed. Guillermo Arriaga’s screenplay draws from the finest traditions of Latin American literature, while Rodrigo Prieto’s cinematography captures the dangerous yet captivating energy of the Mexican metropolis. One of the lead roles is played by Gael García Bernal, for whom Amores Perros and Y Tu Mamá También, released a year later, became a springboard to international fame.
