David Lynch: Collection of Short Films – Part 3

We observe Lynch in his embryonic phase – still unrefined, yet already laced with fear and obsessed with form. Six Men Getting Sick is a kinetic stain – a painterly horror spilling across the screen like wet paint. The Alphabet feels like a child’s nightmare trapped in animation, where learning letters turns into a psychedelic torture. The Grandmother is a dark fairytale about loneliness and an escape into surreal visions, already foreshadowing the world of Eraserhead. Then comes The Amputee – static, yet brimming with unease. In contrast, The Cowboy and the Frenchman feels almost like a lighthearted anecdote – a Western pastiche filtered through Lynch’s surreal lens, where cultural stereotypes collapse into a grotesque dance of miscommunication.

Mikołaj Mizak

David Lynch (1946 – 2025) – an American director, screenwriter, producer and visual artist, born in Missoula, Montana. He studied painting in Philadelphia, before moving to Los Angeles to make films. He began production on his feature-length debut, Eraserhead, while still a student at the American Film Institute’s Centre for Advanced Film and Television Studies, which initially provided funding for the project. Lynch was one of the most original and influential cinema visionaries. His signature mix of surrealism, genre tropes and experimental narration found favour with a wide audience. Lynch’s films relied heavily on striking visual and soundtrack elements, which always function as integral parts of the complex structure of his works. In addition to directing, he has practised painting, photography, meditation and experimented with new media. A three-time Oscar nominee, Lynch was awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for Wild at Heart (1990).

Six Men Getting Sick

A minimalist yet striking animation where six identical men, like mechanical puppets, engage in a repetitive ritual of vomiting. In this early experiment, Lynch creates a grotesque metaphor for human existence – cyclical, relentless, and disturbingly predictable.

The Alphabet

A nightmarish meditation on childhood education as a form of psychological oppression. Lynch fuses live-action and animation into an intense, visceral collage, where a child’s recitation of the alphabet gradually spirals into a full-blown nightmare. Inspired by the real-life anxieties of a relative, the film explores how rigid structures and authority impact the fragile psyche.

The Grandmother

A surreal, unsettling tale of a young boy trapped in an oppressive, suffocating world. In a desperate attempt to escape, he plants a seed that grows into a grotesque yet oddly nurturing grandmother figure. Blending live-action with animation, the film simmers with unspoken fears and emotional intensity – elements that would later define Lynch’s unique cinematic language.

The Amputee

A stark, black-and-white short in which Lynch himself, alongside cinematographer Frederick Elmes, stages an eerie and unsettling moment – a man delivers a monologue about amputating his fingers, while the rhythmic clatter of a typewriter echoes in the background. Balancing between absurdity and body horror, the film conjures an unsettling sense of disorientation and quiet suffering.

The Cowboy and the Frenchman

The Cowboy and the Frenchman presents Lynch in a lighter yet equally eccentric mode. The film unfolds at the intersection of two mythologies: the American Western and European imagination. Cowboys stumble upon an overly emotional Frenchman in the mountains, whose charming chaos and peculiar manners lead to a series of absurd misunderstandings. However, Lynch avoids cheap parody – his grotesque vision has a dreamlike quality, where everything feels just a bit too bright, too stretched, too artificial. This isn’t a realistic cultural confrontation but rather a bizarre dialogue, where truth matters less than the theatricality of the situation.

Lumière

A hypnotic, fleeting impression filmed using an original Lumière-era camera. Embracing the spirit of early cinematic experiments, Lynch captures a single take where light and shadow intertwine to create a mysterious, almost metaphysical aura – like cinema itself contemplating its origins.
